| Ever wonder about how the
Margarita came to be? There are many different theories about this
and this page has some of the most common theories.
History of the Margarita
Theory 1: One theory is that the
Margarita was created by a bartender named Santos Cruz. At least
that is what the Balinese Room formally located in Galveston, TX
would have you believe. They claim that the drink was created by
their bartender in 1948 for actress Margaret Lee. The bar opened
in 1941 but was shut down in 1957
Theory 2: Another theory was started by a
man named Enrique Gutierrez who claimed to have invented the drink
in the early 1940's. He supposedly created the drink for the
actress Rita Hayworth whose real name was Margarita. The actress
at one time worked as a dancer in Tijuana.
Theory 3: Yet another theory comes from
Margaret Sames who claimed to create the Margarita at her bar in
Acapulco. She created the drink with 2 parts tequila, 1 part
Cointreau and 1 part lime juice. She moved to El Paso in 1958 and
even appeared on the Today Show in 1982 to show how to make a
margarita properly.

There are many more theories behind the creation
of the Margarita and this just really scratches the surface. The
fact that everyone wants to claim ownership of the drink speaks of
its importance and popularity. |
