Margarita Crazy

Would summer be the same without the Pina Colada? Of course not, so how did this summer staple come to be? Read on and find out for yourself.

History of the Pina Colada

The Pina Colada is a rum based beverage containing rum coconut cream and pineapple juice. It can be served blended (as with our drink mix) or shaken with ice. If you order one in a bar it will most likely be garnished with a pineapple wedge or a cherry.

So how did this drink come to be? Well it is said to have been created by Roberto Cofresi' a Puerto Rican pirate. He is said to have given the drink to his crew to keep morale high. He made the drink with white rum, coconut and pineapple and it almost certainly improved the spirits of his men. When the Pirate died in 1825 he took the original recipe with him.

But how did it get reintroduced to us? Well the Caribe Hilton Hotel in Puerto Rico would like us to believe that one of their bartenders discovered it. The bartender, Ramon Marrero, allegedly spent 3 months perfecting the drink and introduced it on August 15, 1954. Of course many bars make this same claim so determining the drinks true origins is near impossible. perhaps we should just enjoy the drink for what it is and not over analyze it.
